For kids, fitness can be about much more than strength or speed. At Mosaic Fitness Center in Fairfax, Virginia, youth and teens are encouraged to move, explore, have fun, and discover what they are capable of. In this Provider Spotlight, Ashley Walsh, a Level 1 CrossFit and Kids CrossFit coach and former professional soccer player, shares how Mosaic’s youth fitness program helps children build confidence, develop healthy movement habits, and set goals in a supportive community.

Finding the right fitness program for a child isn't always about finding the most competitive team or the most intense workout. Sometimes, it's about finding a place where kids can feel comfortable being themselves, try something new, and discover that fitness can actually be fun.
Located in Fairfax, Virginia, just behind the Mosaic District shopping center, Mosaic Fitness Center focuses on helping adults and children improve themselves through fitness. Its offerings include functional fitness, recovery and injury prevention, entry-level bootcamps, and dedicated programs for kids and teens.
For this week's Provider Spotlight, we spoke with Ashley Walsh, a Level 1 CrossFit and Kids CrossFit coach at Mosaic Fitness Center, about the inspiration behind its youth program, what makes it different, and how fitness can become a positive part of a child's life.
Can you introduce your organization and provide an overview of your offerings?
"I'm a Level 1 CrossFit and Kids CrossFit coach at Mosaic Fitness Center, located in Fairfax, Virginia, right behind the Mosaic District shopping center. Our mission is simple: to help adults and kids improve themselves and their lives through fitness. We offer functional fitness classes for kids ages 6–11 and teens ages 12–18 on Sunday mornings."
From the Soccer Field to the Gym: What Inspired You to Create the Youth Program?
"As a former professional soccer player, I've always loved fitness. I was inspired to start a youth and teen program this past year because I love working with children. At the gym, I noticed our community has a lot of kids, and I wanted to create a space where they could love fitness as much as their parents do!"
What Makes Mosaic's Youth Program Different?
"One thing we hear from parents is that our program allows kids to be free from the pressures they may feel at home or at school. It makes sense because we really try to create a space where kids can simply have fun and explore fitness. Kids get to learn functional movement patterns using tools like barbells, wall balls, and a gymnastics rig!
The goal isn't simply to make kids stronger. It's to give them an environment where movement becomes something they can enjoy, explore, and feel proud of."
What Kind of Transformation Do You See in Children?
"Kids learn to move well, and sometimes more than they ever have before! I love seeing them light up through physical expression and get excited as they reach goals that they've set their minds to.
Those moments can be small—a new movement, a personal goal, or simply the confidence to try something they couldn't do before—but they can make a big difference in how a child sees themselves."
What Do Parents Often Worry About Before Enrolling?
"Parents often worry about whether the program will meet their child's needs. We address this by having a lengthy conversation before we get started with any classes about what their child wants and needs. At the end of the day, I want our program to be a positive experience for the child and their parents.
That individualized conversation helps make sure the program is aligned with the child's interests, goals, and comfort level rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach."
How Has Being on Neelcamp Helped You Reach More Families or Grow Your Program?
"We are still early in utilizing Neelcamp, and look forward to seeing what can come from our relationship!"
What Should Parents Know Before Signing Their Child Up?
"Parents should know what their child wants to get out of the program. Are they interested in getting ready for school sports? Do they just want to have fun and learn something new? I'm always ready to talk to a parent about how I can help their child reach their goals.
Our classes are capped at 10 due to space and coaching needs, but we modify our schedule and add classes as needed to meet demand."
For children, getting involved in fitness doesn't have to mean chasing competition or performance. It can be about discovering how their bodies move, setting goals, trying new challenges, and finding a community where they feel encouraged to grow.
At Mosaic Fitness Center, Ashley Walsh and the youth coaching team are creating that kind of environment for kids and teens in Fairfax. One where fitness can be both purposeful and playful.
For parents looking for a youth fitness program that emphasizes movement, confidence, and enjoyment, Mosaic Fitness Center offers kids and teens an opportunity to start building a positive relationship with fitness from an early age.
