Artist Residencies in the schools

Overview

Articulture was requested to create an artist-in-residence program in a charter school (now shuttered) for homeless students who did not have arts access. Realizing that school was the one constant for these students and that this place was "theirs'', Articulture decided to focus on the concept of community. We had each grade identify what made up the different aspects of what makes up a community. Through a three-month process they created four large quilted fabric banners to permanently install in their halls.

Additional Information

  • We also offer in school art-in-residencies as requested.
  • These teaching positions are ongoing throughout the school year.
  • All of these programs are grant funded, which enables participants to participate free of charge.
  • The specific artist-in-residence program for houseless elementary students took place in 2012 and was funded through a gift from Plymouth Congregational Church.
  • The broader Art & Healing program, which includes such residencies, focuses on self-identity, self-worth, a sense of belonging, and exploring loss and hope through creativity. Past programs have served homeless children and at-risk teens.
