Biology is the study of life. This middle and high school biology course includes an introduction to the concepts of biology. Students will gain knowledge about the building blocks of life, animal cell biology and cellular processes, as well as molecular genetics and heredity. In addition, the scientific method will be discussed. This course will prepare students for future science courses. This class will include lectures and labs. During the labs, students will learn how to work with microscopes and make slides, investigate microbes and more. In addition, DNA, RNA and the protein synthesis as well as the process of cell division will also be explored. This class will also include a project to be presented on the last day of the semester. This class includes a 1h in-person class and an additional 25min recorded class each week. The recorded part can be taken at any time during the week (before the in-person class). This class is run in two tracks. After the first 5 weeks, you cannot change tracks. Track 1: Students will participate in lectures and in class labs. Quizzes, assignments, lab reports and class projects are optional. No formal grade is given. Track 2: Students will participate in lectures and in class labs. Textbook: Biology by Prentice Hall, Foundation edition. Authors: Miller and Levine. ISBN: 978-0133669619. Students in Track 2 will read the textbook, turn in assignments (including lab reports), quizzes and exams in a timely manner. The class project is mandatory and a formal grade will be given.
