Overview

Community Lodgings' Youth Education Program provides year-round academic support to children in grades 1 through 12 living in the Arlandria-Chirilagua community of Alexandria, Virginia. Staffed by both paid educators and trained volunteers, the program delivers an average of 350 hours of academic and general support per student annually. It is partnered with Alexandria City Public Schools as a Family and Community Engagement (FACE) site, meaning after-school activities are directly aligned with what students are learning in school that day. Daily nutritious meals are provided as part of the program. In addition to academic support, the program offers boys' and girls' mentoring groups for grades 7–12, evening computer classes, and English language learning opportunities for local families.

Additional Information

The after-school program runs Monday through Thursday afternoons during the school year at two learning centers in Alexandria.

The summer program expands offerings to include math, reading and language arts instruction, daily journaling, computer time, arts and crafts, weekly field trips, and recreational activities such as swimming and running clubs, as well as gardening.

The mentoring program serves youth in grades 7–12 and meets every Monday evening, with additional group activities planned once or twice per month. Topics covered include life skills, conflict resolution, and boundary-setting. All adult mentors are carefully screened.

The program operates out of two primary locations: the Fifer Family Learning Center and The New Brookside Learning Center, both in Alexandria, VA.
