Girls R.O.C.K Leadership Camp

About This Camp
Our program for Middle Schoolers empowers 7th and 8th graders to take a Leadership role at camp. Along with daily projects and a program designed to help middle schoolers collaborate, grow and build their leadership skills, our Leadership Campers (aka Counselors in Training) support and work with our primary campers throughout the week. Leadership Campers help plan activities, lead games, and also get to join in the fun of being at camp as they make art and do math right alongside the kids!
Girls R.O.C.K Leadership Camp is a unique camp experience designed to give rising 7th and 8th graders opportunities to be role models for young campers, develop confidence and leadership skills. Girls R.O.C.K Leadership Campers will spend two weeks as a CIT (Counselor-in-Training) where they will spend their days with campers, support them with math projects, plan fun camp activities, play games and make art!
At Girls R.O.C.K. Leadership Camp you will develop R.O.C.K leadership skills. This stands for Responsible, Outspoken, Creative and Kind. You will have guidance and support from staff in helping out with camp, being a role model for young campers, and building confidence. You will have multiple opportunities to practice and reflect on these skills within the camp setting while also having fun!
Program Duration: We feel that two weeks is just the right amount of time to really get a full experience from the program. One week of camp goes by in a blur! We have found that because of the large learning curve in transitioning to the CIT program, often participants feel most successful partway through the first week. Participating in 2 weeks will allow CITs to feel strong and confident entering their second week, providing an even better experience the second week. Additionally, the Leadership Facilitator will be leading the CITs through a program that includes lessons and reflections on leadership and their camp experience. This curriculum will include higher levels of support in the first week, then will hand more responsibility off to the CITs for the second week, allowing them to get more opportunities for practice in developing these skills.
Cost and Payments: Each two week session is $400. A $75 non-refundable deposit is included in each week's camp fees and ensures your spot in the program. The $75 non-refundable deposit per camp session is not refundable in any situation. Payment Options:
Daily Schedule (Counselor-in-Training): Counselors arrive on Mondays at 8:00 to meet their team, but the rest of the week you arrive at 8:30. The camp day ends at 3:30, and counselors usually stay until 4:00 to help pack up for the day. We ask each counselor to commit to one longer day each week to help with our Extended Day program, and on that day you stay until 5:30. During the day you get a 15 minute break and a 30 minute lunch. On the later day, you'll get a second 15 minute break.
Extended Day Program: The Extended Care program is available to campers at all locations except The Kruckeberg Botanic Garden. Morning Extended Care: 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m., Monday - Friday Afternoon Extended Care*: 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m., Monday - Thursday Cost: $90 for the week (includes both Morning and Afternoon extended care) Drop-in care is available if space allows, payable by Venmo, cash or check. *Why is afternoon Extended Day not offered on Fridays during summer camp? Our camp staff use the time on Friday afternoons to clean and pack up the materials from the week as well as prepare for the next week of camp. At many of our camp locations, the rooms we occupy during the week are used by other groups on the weekends. It would be too hectic and unsafe to supervise children while the staff close up camp for the week. Thanks for your understanding. You can add morning care, afternoon care or both during the registration process. If you need to add extended day to your child's registration after you have registered, you can add or cancel Extended Day without penalty or fees. If you do not need the entire week of care, you can pay for drop-in care for morning or afternoon care as long as space allows.
What to Bring to Camp: Backpack: We ask that each child bring only one backpack that contains her lunch, outerwear and any other personal items. We will not have space for each child to bring multiple bags or loose belongings. Shoes: All campers need to wear sneakers or closed-toe sandals such as Keens. If your child cannot tie her own shoes please send her in slip on tennis shoes or shoes with Velcro Nut-free Lunch/Snack: Please ensure your child is able to open and close any containers, bags or jars. As we will be eating outdoors all lunches need to be waste-free. Please send food in reusable containers. With any and all food waste and packaging we will ask campers to "pack it in, pack it out." We do recommend using a frozen water bottle as an ice pack to keep food cold and provide a cool afternoon drink! Please be sure to send both a lunch and a snack. Campers who participate in Extended Care need an additional snack. Water Bottle: Please send a full 32-oz water bottle to camp to ensure your camper has enough water to drink throughout the day. Sunscreen: We require all campers to have and wear sunscreen at camp. Please apply sunscreen before camp starts. Please label your child's sunscreen and make sure she knows where it is in her bag and how to apply it herself. We will ask that girls apply sunscreen to face, legs and arms and teach our youngest campers how to apply sunscreen on their own. Girls Rock Math staff will not apply sunscreen on a child's body. Clothing: Have your child dress in layers (tank or t-shirt, long sleeved shirt, light jacket or sweatshirt) and please send appropriate rain gear if it looks like it may rain. The kids tend to take off their layers as the day warms up. Because of this LABEL all clothing with her name. If your child tends to need a spare set of clothing due to accidents, be sure to pack these.
Friend Requests: We do our best to honor friend requests whenever possible.
Photo Release: Photographs and videos that represent our educational programs help share our mission with new participants and families, helping us share our work and mission with others. At checkout we ask you to agree to the Policies/Terms and Waivers. If you are uncomfortable with Girls Rock Math using your child's image, please download and print Photo Opt-Out form found in your Family Handbook. Bring it with you on the first day of camp and give it to the Site Coordinator.
Behavior Expectations:
Social Emotional and Behavioral Supports: We ask that you disclose important information about your child's social and emotional regulation and its effect on her behavior so that our staff can best support your child at camp. If we determine that your child will need additional support, or if you indicate that your child would benefit from extra support at camp, we will reach out to you in May or June to determine how we can set your child up for a successful week at camp. If your camper receives 1:1 support at school or would benefit from this at camp, we ask that you complete the Aide Form and provide a trusted adult such as a parent, grandparent, or nanny to attend camp with your child. Please let us know what your camper needs and/or make arrangements by emailing us no later than June 1. We understand that all children will have big emotions bubble up from time to time and are prepared to help our campers navigate complicated feelings if they arise. However, if your child is prone to physically and/or verbally aggressive behavior, or running away and hiding behavior, we will not be able to provide the level of support necessary to care for your child at camp. Likewise, at this time, we are not staffed to serve campers who require a higher level of specialized support in attending to daily living skills such as toileting, bathing or dressing.
Medical Information: We understand that medical information is confidential and do not need a detailed health history for your child to attend camp. However, if your child has any health condition that may impact their experience at camp, may present at camp, or may be exacerbated by camp activities, we ask that you provide us with information to keep your child safe at camp. This includes:
Health and Safety Policies:
If you notice symptoms of illness in your child before camp, please use the symptom flow chart provided by the Washington State Department of Health to determine next steps for your child and family. If your child is sick, please keep her home and notify the Site Coordinator. If your camper gets sick while at camp our staff will contact a parent or legally authorized adult who will be asked to pick them up immediately.
If your camper will need to be administered or will self-administer a medication during camp, please print, complete and sign the Medication Authorization Form. The form must be given to your child's teacher on the first day of camp. Please bring the child's medication in a clear, zip-lock bag, labeled with her name, proper dosage, and instructions. Our staff will keep their medication in their emergency supplies for the duration of camp. If your child keeps an epi-pen or inhaler in their possession during camp hours we recommend a fanny pack that they can wear at all times. Our staff will not be responsible for ensuring your child has their inhaler or epi-pen if they move away from their designated camp area and go to a park, playground or other location.
All Girls Rock Math employees are required to hold a valid CPR and First Aid certification. Additionally, all employees receive Anaphylaxis/EpiPen training and abuse prevention training. Employees are trained in Abuse Prevention and undergo a criminal background check and reference check prior to training for their position at Girls Rock Math.
It is of the upmost importance that campers are safe at Girls Rock Math. State Designated camper-to-staff ratios are always maintained and no camper is to be left alone with a single staff member. When transitioning to and from recess, staff conduct head counts and supervise boundaries when outdoors. Adults must be authorized and use a password to pick up children at the end of the day. Unknown adults, even with a password must show photo ID.
Counselors and staff are never allowed in the bathroom stalls with children, and all children must be toilet trained. If your child is prone to accidents, please send extra clothing and ensure your child is able to clean and dress herself.
If a child is in 5th grade or higher, they may sign themselves out of camp and walk home providing you have completed the Camper Walk Home Consent form and turned it into the camp staff on the first day of camp.
Cancellation and Refund Policy: Cancellation requests must be in writing. Please email with your name, child's name, and registration information including the week, theme, and location of the camp.
Prorating Camp Fees: When you sign up for camp, please select a camp which you anticipate your child attending the full week. We are unable to register children for partial weeks and do not provide a reduced rate if your child cannot attend the entire week. We recognize that due to travel sometimes children may miss a Monday or Friday. Our camp staff will do their best to make the camp experience positive for any child who misses a day.
