Lower Elementary

About This Camp
The following is an overview of the Montessori curriculum for the Lower Elementary classroom (grades 1-3). This is a partial list; each major area of the curriculum has a sequence of approximately 100 lessons taught over a period of three years.
In the elementary classroom students work independently and or in small groups.
During the elementary age the child is developing his physical body and maturing. The child is desiring to learn more about the "how" and "why" things happen phase. The information and knowledge they are pursuing are not found with just concrete answers to questions that ask, "What is this?" but rather a deeper understanding of "Why is this?" and "How?"
Not only do we continue to support children learning at their own pace, but they are also encouraged to engage in being a contributing member of a respectful community, they learn to question, be responsible for their learning, and become critical thinkers. These are skills that they will be able to use later in life.
As they enter a new period of development the students are working towards a transition from concrete to abstract thinking, creativity, imagination, developing more socialization skills, an interest in social justice, fairness, and compassion.
The lower elementary program is a multi-age learning group of students ages 6-to-9 years old. This allows for that need to collaborate and socialize. Older children are seen as role models in the community. They support the younger student's growth and development through socialization, assisting with work, and modeling skills that they've mastered. Younger students follow the example modeled by the older students. This is an environment that children can feel confident to learn and reach their full potential.
Students are exploring the Cosmic Studies and the Five Great Lessons. We help students discover their natural love for learning through research, science, math, language, reading, cultural studies, and so much more.
