About This Camp

Overview

Move2Learn's Outside the Classroom program is a free, school-based movement club initiative serving students at Alexandria City Public Schools. Designed to support students who have been identified as struggling academically or emotionally, the program is led by teachers, counselors, and school staff who already have meaningful relationships with participants. Clubs include running, walking, yoga, lacrosse, boxercise, dance, and jump rope. Each activity is woven together with Move2Learn's Social, Emotional, and Academic Learning (SEAL) framework, teaching students to recognize and manage stress and strong emotions through movement — helping them overcome the feelings that get in the way of learning. All programs take place on school grounds, removing barriers like cost and transportation, and all necessary equipment is provided at no charge.

Additional Information

Participation is primarily by teacher referral — students are hand-selected by their teachers as part of a personalized success plan. Good attendance and keeping up with schoolwork are prerequisites for some clubs, such as the popular Boxercise Club at Francis C. Hammond Middle School.

All equipment is supplied by Move2Learn, including yoga mats, jump ropes, lacrosse sticks, shoes, socks, sports hijabs, and sports bras, ensuring every student has what they need to participate fully. The program is entirely free to students and families.
