Cappies is a program where theatre and journalism students are trained as critics and attend each others shows. Cappies student critics discuss and learn writing skills for publication, and local media publish the students' bylines. High school plays and musicals gain high-profile publicity through Cappies nights, which serve theatre much like Friday night lights serve football. Theatre programs are celebrated for their excellence as 100% student-driven critics decide who among their peer performers and technicians should be recognized for awards at the end of the season. The year concludes with glamorous Cappies Galas that build excitement and grow audiences for high school theatre.
