Pre-Kindergarten Program

About This Camp
At Virginia Hills Preschool, our Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) Program is well known in our community. We pride ourselves in having our graduates ready for the start of Kindergarten. Our curriculum begins with the Fairfax County Public Schools' Kindergarten Readiness Guidelines. However, our graduates are far above and beyond those guidelines when they leave our building. Our Pre-K teachers have many years of experience and are very skilled at assessing each child (and adjusting their curriculum to meet each child's needs). At this stage of development, our program focuses on increased independence, understanding of feelings and skills in problem-solving, and conflict resolution. Lots of modeling, role-playing and story-telling is used to develop and reinforce these life skills. In language and literacy, we are learning to understand more complex questions. The students learn about books and their proper use. We incorporate the "Handwriting Without Tears" writing curriculum. We continue to fine-tune those gross and fine motor skills. Our days include math concepts, learning about characteristics of objects, plus patterns and sorting. The Pre-K children also increase their demonstration of creativity and memory as those skills continue to develop.
We feel that it is imperative for our Pre-Kindergarteners to have consistent structure to their day to prepare them for success in Kindergarten. Therefore, our only part-time option is 5 days (with extended care options). Of course, we also offer a full-time option for Pre-K.
