Overview

In "Creature Quake," Rachel Kunreuther and Douglas Stookey design reshaped the camp's landscape to reveal enormous creatures in earth, sky and lake. Beam campers and staff constructed an array of large-scale forms and structures imbued with their own kind of life and movement. Says Kunreuther of the project, "We wanted to build creatures that evoke the very real apprehension and fascination many of us have felt, in all stages of our lives, for the unknown world around us. By creating something real out of what is daunting and mysterious, we invite campers to forge positive personal relationships with their natural surroundings, to be inspired instead of afraid."

Additional Information

  • Project Masters: Rachel Kunreuther and Douglas Stookey
  • Every session, campers and staff build a unique and spectacular large-scale collaborative Project that serves as the centerpiece of the Beam experience.
  • Projects are chosen from dozens of proposals by artists, architects, and big thinkers in an annual international design competition.
  • In the first and second week of the session, campers will participate in 90 minutes of Project Fundamentals each day.
  • Project Fundamentals will include training in project management, structural design and the specific construction and fabrication methods, such as carpentry and metalwork, required for the Project.
  • The third week of the session will be dedicated almost exclusively to the building of the Project.
  • Camper-led teams of campers will be challenged to execute phases of the Project autonomously.
  • Teams will be supervised by the Project Staff, but it will be up to them to ask for specific guidance and support if they encounter roadblocks.
