About This Camp

Overview

The Slingerland® Approach is a multisensory, structured literacy program designed to support students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences. It is the only classroom-based adaptation of the 1-on-1 Orton-Gillingham Approach that includes reading, writing, spelling, and handwriting instruction. This approach has had proven success in helping students learn to read and write, building lifelong confidence and skills for students. Structured literacy is at the heart of how Hamlin Robinson School teaches reading, writing, and spelling, providing explicit, systematic, multisensory instruction tailored to student needs.

Additional Information

Students kick off the day with Slingerland® classes—structured, multisensory reading and writing lessons built to boost literacy skills for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences. This three-and-a-half-week class is led by HRS faculty and staff. Morning sessions give students a strong foundation before they head out on afternoon adventures. All students are grouped by grade level. Using the Slingerland multisensory approach, students practice written expression through phonemic awareness and the smallest unit of sight, sound and feel: a single letter. Students practice forming letters through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic routines to reinforce the connection between written letters and sounds. Key components include: Trained and responsive teachers, Handwriting with structure and purpose, Oral language before written language, Direct phonics and morphology instruction, and Multisensory word work. Slingerland® class and activity camps can be combined to create a full-day experience.
